The Power of Journaling

The Power of Journaling

We've all been given the advice of 'start journaling' at some point in our lives, or heard of it none-the-least. It's such a simple tip: get a journal and grab a pen and get to work! And yet, to many it is not always that appealing to get stared with. Why?

Take a few minutes and ask yourself why you have not yet begun journaling. Maybe it's because there are just too many thoughts racing, so you may never put the pen down. Maybe there's not enough to journal about (so you think). Whatever it may be, I invite you to continue reading and consider the benefits of adding journaling to your routine.

1. It requires little initial effort

Of course, reaping more benefits of journaling comes with putting in some effort when actually journaling, like processing the emotions and jotting them down. And actually, most find that this process comes much easier than they would initially think. Once you start writing, the thoughts just keep flowing. Set a timer! Before you know it it's been an hour and it felt like 5 mins.

2. It serves as a tool for personal growth

When we go inward, we get closer and closer to healing, uncovering things that hold us back or what we've been neglecting to focus on, we reflect and are able to grow. Journaling is the outlet for self-growth because we get to let out all the emotions and stressors that are running wild in our minds. It is an amazing stress reliever.

3. It can improve mental health and wellbeing

Becoming more self-aware, reducing your stress, and getting out what you have been holding in are wildly helpful for your mental health. Again, a healthier mindset is just moments away. You can even journal in your bed!

4. It boosts creativity & improves writing skills

Our brain is a muscle, use it! Journaling more leads to more creativity & writing skills that can benefit you in a variety of ways. You learn to problem solve, think more critically, and release what you don't need to carry.

5. It's relaxing, yet effective

You can journal practically anytime, anywhere. First thing in the morning grab a cup of coffee and tea and find a peaceful spot to journal at. It can be something to look forward to once you get started with it in your routine. It can be calming, yet you still reap the tremendous benefits. Total mental health & wellness boost!

6. You know what they say about writing..

There is a reason why in school they have you write down notes. Writing leads to doing. Journaling can aid in goal setting and actually getting you steps closer to achieving those goals, whatever they are big and small. When you write something down, you are more likely to remember it and bring more awareness to it in your brain.

Still not sure where to begin? Some examples of journaling for beginners can be to:

  • Write about your daily activities and experiences
  • Reflect on your emotions and feelings
  • Jot down a gratitude list, where you write down things you are grateful for each day
  • Set goals, small and large, and track progress towards them
  • Brainstorm and free write on a particular topic or issue(s) that have been on your mind
  • Feeling extra creative? Create a vision board!

Remember, there are no rules when it comes to journaling, so feel free to experiment and find what works best for you. And when in doubt, just write it out! And watch the magic happen.
